SUPERWOMEN IN CONCERT 2020 // AWARE //

Happy International Women’s Day, all. Here’s to strong women. May we know them, support them, be them.

Recently, I had the honour of photographing an army of women for AWARE Singapore’s 35th Anniversary Fundraiser Superwomen in Concert 2020. Each individual phenomenally strong and beautiful in her own right.

There’s the legendary Rahimah Rahim, the alluring Joanna Dong 董姿彦, the effervescent Dim Sum Dollies Pam Oei Selena Tan Jo Tan, the unstoppable LADY KΛSH ॐ, the wonderful Alemay Fernandez… then there’s Inch Chua who is a dream, the electric Sharul Channa, the charming Aisyah Aziz, the formidable Lynnette Seah, the power duo RRILEY and Narelle of The Sam Willows, the lovely Nikki Muller, the delightful trio Helena, Maya and Lazmin Zainudin, the dynamic Sheena Seah and Jade Riccio Danz Ppl with Sheena Seah, and! The freakin irresistible Siti Khalijah Zainal. It was an intense, unforgettable 2 days’ shoot.

Come 23 April 2021, all these superwomen take the stage, along with the one and only @StefanieSun, for a one-night only SUPERWOMEN IN CONCERT at Esplanade.

Hosted by Nikki Muller & Beatrice Chia-Richmond, all proceeds go towards AWARE’s Women’s Helpline and Sexual Assault Care Centre services.

I’m proud to be a part of this and to support Pam Oei and AWARE Singapore in the good work the organization continues to do. A few days ago, some images with subjects sporting cornrows were flagged by a handful of netizens, citing cultural appropriation. With respect, instead of getting into the controversial debate of cultural appropriation, let’s channel our energies on larger problems in our society where people intend real harm. To address those who knowingly hurt, exploit, and discriminate. Isn’t that what really matters? We need to band together to effect change where it’s truly needed.

This International Women’s Day, gather your tribe of women, AND men, to support the causes you believe in.
